The German Shepherd is a breed of large-sized working dog that originated in Germany in the late 19th century.
They are also known as Alsatian in the UK and parts of Europe.
German Shepherds are highly intelligent and trainable dogs, and are commonly used as police and military dogs, as well as for search and rescue, therapy, and assistance work.
German Shepherds have a strong work ethic and are highly protective of their families, which can make them good guard dogs.
The breed standard for German Shepherds calls for a well-muscled, athletic body and a black-and-tan coat. However, German Shepherds also come in other colors such as sable, black and white, twith a coat that could be long or short. They are large dogs with a weight between 50-90 pounds, and an average height of 24-26 inches for males and 22-24 inches for females.
